Director and Principal Engineer - Ben Jedrej CPEng RPEQ
Ben is a Chartered Professional Civil Engineer and Registered Professional Engineer (RPEQ) in Queensland with over 32 years experience in general civil and structural engineering. He has led the design, managed diverse teams and acted as the Superintendent during construction phase for range of civil engineering projects including roads, land development, and water and sewerage infrastructure.
Further to his design experience, Ben is experienced in construction monitoring and checking of construction QA documentation; liaison with designers to resolve technical issues; consultation with land owners, environmental groups, customers and other stakeholders; preparation of safety plans; and facilitation of risk assessment workshops for various asset types.
He has a diverse skill set and a reputation for delivering quality work with many repeat clients.
In 2006 Ben moved to Australia where he became the lead designer for GHD on the Coffs Harbour Water Reclaimation Plant, in Alliance with Coffs Harbour City Council. The works meet the irrigation needs of the region, while conserving drinking water supplies. Ben enjoyed working in a multi disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical and process engineers and was impressed that the Council had the vision to work in Alliance, pooling the best knowledge and skills collaboratively. It came as no surprise that this innovative project went on to win the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) award for recovering, reusing and recycling.
With GHD and later with SMEC Ben went on to complete numerous complex projects, including spending a year on the assets team at Hunter Water responding to failures in the water supply system, conducting condition assessments and scheduling maintenance to prevent failure emergencies. He also worked as Superintendents Representative for the replacement of the main trunk water main into Newcastle.
In 2014 Ben founded JED CIVIL in the mid north coast of NSW. JED CIVIL is an Engineering Consultancy working locally and nationally. He undertakes a wide range of civil design works and project management. He has worked on large and small scale industrial and residential subdivisions, developing excellent relationships within Councils from Port Maquarie to Grafton and Armidale.
projects
Detailed Design of Small to Medium Subdivisions
Provide detailed design of small to medium sized subdivisions including roads, stormwater drainage, water supply and sewerage reticulation. Occasional design of small sewage pump stations. Engagement and management of subconsultants to inform design including surveyors, geotechnical, electrical and environmental engineers, and landscape architects.
Designs require management and coordination of other design inputs in particular environmental engineer for stormwater quality treatment design and electrical engineer for electrical reticulation and potential conflicts with other utilities.
Watermain and Sewer Renewals, City of Coffs Harbour
Provide detailed design for water main and sewer renewals or duplications of various lengths from 50m to 2.2km at various locations within Coffs Harbour area.
Renewing water mains and sewers in congested road verges requires detailed and accurate horizontal and vertical alignments that avoid potential conflicts with other buried utilities, which should limit construction issues and delays. By using accurate buried utility location horizontal and vertical alignments of existing buried utilities could be included in the 3D model and assist in avoiding potential conflicts.
Woodburn Bores Replacement, Rous County Council
Under a D&C contract provided detailed design of above ground pipework for flowmeters and a control valve associated with the upgrade of the Woodburn Borefield.
Early connection of the pipework to existing pipelines was required to maintain water supply. Thrust block were design and concrete specified to allow connection and pressurisation after 24 hours.
Woolgoolga Sewerage Strategy Review, City of Coffs Harbour
Provide a review of the trunk sewerage strategy for the town of Woolgoolga and recommend alternative design solutions. Included engagement of specialist consultant to review proposed installation of trunk sewers using trenchless technology. Ultimately recommended avoiding trenchless installation in favour of additional large pump stations based on net present value of construction and operation and maintenance costs. This also prevented multiple pump stations using a common rising main.
Kalang Road, Bellingen Shire Council
Detailed design of civil works for the restoration of slips along Kalang Road at 32 sites. Our scope included developing concept designs by geotechnical engineers supplied by the client into detailed design drawings for construction.
The restoration methods included regarding of uphill embankments and rock fill buttressing or post and panel walls for down hill embankments, with guardrails at the post and panel retaining wall sites. Detailed structural design of the post and panel walls was provided by the client. Also, we engaged surveyor for additional detailed survey at some of the sites and a TfNSW accredited estimator for construction cost estimates.
One post and panel wall site resulted in a conflict with existing Telstra infrastructure. We liaised with Telstra and arranged a site meeting to develop an agreed solution to the relocation.
